Obituary of Dimetrius Francis Blackwell
Dimetrius Francis Blackwell, 76, peacefully transitioned from this life into eternity on December 19, 2024 at the Lyons VA Medical Center in Lyons, New Jersey.
Born on March 24, 1948 to the late Frank and Mildred (nee Bowden) Blackwell in Newark, New Jersey, Dimetrius was affectionately known to his family and close friends as “Meechie”. The oldest of four, Meechie, spent his formative years with his parents, two brothers and sister in Baltimore, Maryland, Newark New Jersey and New York City where he attended high school.
At age 20, Dimetrius entered the U.S. Army. During his active service (1968 -1972), he attained the rank of Sergeant and courageously completed a tour of duty in the Vietnam War (1968-1969). For his service, he was recognized with a host of medals including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm awarded for valorous combat achievement, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. Meechie was also proud of achieving “Expert” status, the highest qualification of marksmanship in the U.S. Army.
After his tour in Vietnam, Dimetrius was stationed in Munich, Germany where he met Regina Lillian Tisseverasinghe, his wife of 44 years. Together they had three children, Dimetrius “Adrian”, Ayesha Carmen and Maurice Rohan, ultimately settling in South Orange in 1980.
Meechie served as a US Postman from 1973 until his retirement, where he faithfully served the Ironbound section of Newark. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and for helping others.
Meechie was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed spending time renovating his homes, showcasing his poker skills with his brothers and friends, and restoring and driving his prized 1968 Dodge Charger. His favorite pastimes included listening to jazz music, playing chess, watching football, especially the NY Giants, and watching science fiction movies. He was always there to offer tough love, and common sense guidance to those who sought his advice.
Dimetrius leaves to cherish his memory, his two sons, Dimetrius Adrian Blackwell (Adonna) and Maurice Blackwell, his daughter Ayesha Blackwell-Hawkins (James), two brothers Dicarlo “Carlo” Blackwell (Marie), Martinez “Marty” Blackwell (June), his sister Murty “Tina” Jennings, his grandchildren Brandon Blackwell (Ariel), and Caila Blackwell, and host of family and friends.
Dimetrius was preceded in death by his loving wife, Regina, his parents, and his sister, Bonita Blackwell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Vietnam Veterans of America.
