Obituary of Robert G. Slater
The passing of Det. Robert G. Slater of Beach Haven, New Jersey, leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of many. We say farewell to a dedicated and kind soul who tragically passed away while on duty in Woodbridge, NJ, on January 29, 2025. Robert was born on October 23, 1965, in Morristown and grew up in Belleville, where he spent his formative years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Barbara Rinaldi and his faithful companion, Bruzer; his sisters, MaryAnn Slater and Nancy M. Cumming and Craig; his brothers, William J. Slater and Martin H. Slater and Gina; as well as his cherished nieces, JulieAnn Cumming, Chelsey Cooney, Meghan Hook, and Mary Ferrara, and nephews, John Ferrara and Michael Cumming.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, John W. Slater Jr. and Anna T. Slater, and his brother, John T. Slater.
Robert's work ethic has always been unwavering. He began his career at a young age as a carpenter with Local 68, where he honed his skills for 10 years. Driven by a desire for new challenges, he made the bold decision to transition into law enforcement at the age of 35. He kicked off his law enforcement career at the Bureau of Criminal Identification, working in the radio room. It was here that Robert quickly distinguished himself, earning a reputation for his dedication and hard work, and steadily making a name for himself in the field.
Robert was an extraordinary man whose legacy will forever be etched in the heart of Essex County. For 25 years, he dedicated his life to service as an Essex County Sheriff Officer, most notably as a Detective on the Fugitive Squad. As Current President of PBA Local 183, a role he held with distinction, Robert fiercely protected the rights of union members, leveraging his sharp wit and unwavering determination to ensure their voices were heard.
His exceptional critical thinking, relentless dedication, and deep compassion for others guided countless individuals through both challenging and triumphant moments. His impact on the Essex County Sheriff’s Office will never fade, and his contributions will always be remembered. Robert was also a proud member of the Giblin Association and the Emeralds Society, further exemplifying his commitment to both his profession and community.
Visitation will be held on February 4th 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave, Short Hills, NJ 07078. A funeral Mass will be held on February 5th 2025 at 11:30 AM at St. Rose of Lima Church interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in E. Hanover.
