Obituary of Michael N. LaMorgese
Michael Nicholas LaMorgese Jr.
June 28, 1936 – June 16, 2025
Michael Nicholas LaMorgese Jr., a pioneering figure in New Jersey’s construction and infrastructure industries, passed away on June 16, 2025 at the age of 88. Born in Newark, New Jersey, on June 28, 1936, to Anna and Michael LaMorgese, Michael grew up alongside his sister Lucille, embracing a strong work ethic and deep family values that would shape his life and career.
A proud graduate of St. Benedict’s Preparatory School’s 1954 class and an enlisted member of the Naval Reserve, Sea Bee Class Construction Battalion, Michael began his career working with his father paving driveways. In 1959, he founded Roman Asphalt Corporation, where he built a legacy as a visionary leader in roadway and bridge construction across New Jersey and beyond. Under his direction, Roman Asphalt contributed to the maintenance of landmark projects including the George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln Tunnel, and the New Jersey Turnpike.
In recognition of his lifelong contributions to the industry and in addition to a multitude of other industry awards, Michael was inducted into the New Jersey Asphalt Pavement Association Hall of Fame in 2010, a testament to his leadership, innovation, and dedication to excellence.
Michael lived in Short Hills, New Jersey with his beloved wife of 60 years, Anda Solvita LaMorgese. Together they built a close-knit and loving family. He was the proud father of three children: Lisa Wachter, Michael J. LaMorgese, and Kristina Sula and her husband Jeffrey. He was a devoted grandfather to Kyle, Erik, and Kevin Wachter, Chasity Picillo, Krystina Fischer, Samantha LaMorgese and Alexandra and John Sula. He is great-grandfather to Samantha Grace, Weston, Madeline, Elizabeth, Francesca and August.
More than for his professional success and generosity, Michael will be remembered for his magnetic personality, his incredible gift as an orator and his boundless zest for life. He was always the impetus for fun, throwing parties for most any occasion imaginable. He told unforgettable stories and jokes with such wit, timing and expression that he could entertain a roomful. His megawatt smile, infectious laugh and warm spirit drew people in and created lasting bonds with everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Michael’s legacy is one of deep love for his family, tireless dedication to his craft, and an enduring ability to bring joy to others. His impact will live on in the roads we travel, the stories we share, and the family who loved him so deeply.
Visitation will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave, Short Hills on Wednesday, June 18th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and Thursday June 19th from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church on Friday, June 20th at 10:00 AM. Entombment is private.
