I knew the Nardone family. I went to first Street school and Columbia high school as well. I graduated in 1949. I worked at Berlin’s department store as well. Sorry to hear of. Gerard’s passings. My name is Earl Wicks. I am 95 years old and so far going strong. I now live in Virginia. I have been trying to hear from anyone that graduated in 1949.

I grew up in South Orange and was fortunate to work for Gerry in High School and College. Gerry was the consummate business man. He taught myself and coworkers how to act in a professional manner when helping customers. These skills helped me tremendously as I worked in Banking in New Jersey and New York for forty one years. Gerry blended business skills with energy, communication skills with a warmth that was seen by customers and workers. Gerry was the first manager I knew to
say “the customer is always right” , decades before it became a common catch phrase. Gerry required us to work hard but some how humor was part of our daily routine.
My coworkers and I still get together and recall our time working for Gerry. How lucky for us to have those experiences and memories.
Thank you Gerry for every thing you did for us.

What a wonderful testament to a beautiful man. I remember my Mom telling all of us, "We are going to Gerry's for clothes". He was always welcoming and nice when mom walked in with all of us, (5 at the time, soon to be 7 of us).
He was a South Orange/Maplewood legend

I remember him every time I am at the corner of south orange ave & Vose when he had the clothing store. I worked at the sandwich factory. That was nearly 50 years ago! That’s the kind of impression his smile radiated. A truly nice guy.

Funny, gentle man who loved life and enjoyed a good joke. Fond memories of The Church Street Gang. Jesus needed a Crossing Guard.
