We're so very sorry about Tom's passing. Tom gave us some good words during our time in Troop 21, and it was always a pleasure to run into him in the neighborhood or at Maplecrest Park A truly nice man. He'll be missed by many. We picked up this news late, as we've moved out of state. Very sorry we could not attend the service.

Let's get real. Tom was a knucklehead. He never let me go past his house without forcing me to sit and have a beer or three with him as he yelled somewhat cringe observations at the unsuspecting neighbors. All I had to say to Suellen when I was late for dinner was that I ran into Tom. My first awareness of Tom was about twenty nine years ago when I looked out from my porch and saw some knucklehead fly fishing on Bowdoin Street. Guess who? The best was during one of the hurricanes, probably Irene, when I again looked out, around 2 AM, and he was in full Gorton's Fisherman yellow rain gear up to his knees in rushing water. I suspected there would be beer involved so I joined him. Yes, I brought beer. After the tree fell on Doug's car and was blocking his driveway the next day an enterprising guy in a truck pulled up in front of his house and asked me if we wanted the tree roved from his house. I said you better ask the guy on the roof with the chainsaw. Needless to say he left. Next he came to my house with Doug and we (mostly he) chain sawed the tree that landed in my pool.
He was my speedy partner in the block party. I had no input for the frozen margaritas.
Not only did he help Bowdoin St. he did all the repairs on Dickens Village, built the garden and planted vegetables for the Elks food bank. Oh, and he helped me refinish our basement. To say nothing of sitting on his porch teasing neighbors.
I will miss him dearly. A helluva guy.

To a dear and wonderful friend, who was a good man, a wonderful husband and father…and an okay fisherman. You’ll be missed but we have great memories to reflect on..

I really enjoyed working with Tom in the Reservation, on the Chainsaw Gang and with the SWAT trail team. He was easy to be with, and brought a sense of humor to difficult work. He will be sorely missed.
I can't make it to the service, but offer sincere condolences to his family and other friends.

When I first started working in Maplewood Recreation, Tom asked to schedule a meeting with me. I joked, asking how was I in trouble already? The meeting was a kind welcoming, and sharing of historical and helpful information. He was a lover of Maplewood Rec, and gave his time generously for decades. Thank you, Tom, for coaching and caring for our basketball kids, whom are now grateful adults. Thank you for serving on the Rec Board, and for caring so much for our parks and open spaces. There will be tears shed this December when you are not heckling me at Ricalton Square, and boasting about the fantastic setup and 'better' tree! You kind of represent Dickens Village magic to me. I am sorry to be away for your services, but we will be honoring you in Recreation. Our grateful team will think of something creative. We will keep growing the girls program you cared so much about also. Our basketball OG's already created an award in your name years ago- and we will honor you always. Thank you for supporting our kids, our Department, and our town. I stand by my love of rainbow Christmas lights, and also our love of you. Thank you, for always.

Dear Doug and Sara,
We extend our deepest condolences to you in your time of grief. The sky over Kezar Lake seemed to brighten when Tom arrived, and we loved to watch him get into that little boat with his rod and reel and a look of utter contentment on his face. We would talk and joke with him every day, often more than once. You know this, of course, but Tom was goodness, kindness, and generosity personified. We talk about him fondly and hold him in our hearts. We were privileged to call him a friend.
And to Kevin, Tom's dear friend and fellow fisherman: We send our sympathies to you as well. We hope to see Doug and you at the Lake next summer. It will, as always, be lovely here, even if it won't be the same without Tom's company. He was very special.

I need to share the same sentiments that Chris expressed. Tom was the nicest guy in Maplewood. He would go out of his way to help a neighbor, a stranger, a friend, a friend of a friend, fix anything that needed fixing at Saint Joseph's Church (even though he was not Catholic) and anybody and everybody else. He always had a quiet composure to him when he was coaching. The kids all felt comfortable around him. Not only did he coach, but he was a good ballplayer as well. It was many of Thursday nights that Tom and a bunch of old guys would get together to play softball at Maplecrest Park or Memorial Park until it was dark. Without Tom, the games would have never happened. Tom as you might have guessed was the responsible one who brought all of the bats, balls and bases.
If you needed help on a home maintenance project - Tom was the first one to offer his services. If you wouldn't let him help, he would loan you the power tool you needed and never bug you to return it. I only wish I could have repaid Tom for all of his kind acts over the years. I offered many times, but Tom rarely if ever asked for any help.
Tom had a great (dry) sense of humor and enjoyed "busting" on his friends. Tom could also handle it when his friends "busted" on him.
I will miss Tom and want his family to know he was a GREAT guy!!

It’s tough to say goodbye to my friend.
“Friend” doesn’t cover it. Tom was my bench coach, site foreman, and consigliere for the better part of the last 15 years. His loss will be felt throughout this community because Tom was the go-to guy for a lot of us. Tom was the guy who kept our town’s Dickens’ Village in good repair and built special oyster trays for the local Oysterfest. He was the neighbor who would help you clear a fallen tree on your property during a storm. Tom was one of the people who are part of the thread that makes communities what they are; it’s hard to imagine this town without him.
Tom and I met on a softball field. He was working out a bunch of high school girls, and I ended up asking Tom to be my bench coach that summer. We won our first scrimmage and then went 0-17 the rest of the summer! Throughout it all, and all of the five years we coached together, Tom was incredibly patient with the girls, always teaching, always trying to help them get better. He LOVED to coach. My grown daughters still referred to him as “Coach Tom”.
When Rent Party decided to build a garden, Tom was my first call. He organized the build with military precision and was part of The Garden for many, many years. When things needed fixing in The Garden, Tom would figure it out. The last time I saw Tom was in The Garden three weeks ago. He had come to offer his condolences to Donna and me about the passing of our Lucy. Tom always had treats in his pockets for Lucy!
When Rent Party was given the opportunity to move our shows to The Woodland, Tom, again, became the guy, building a storage closet and crafting the bar we’d use every month. He was our (self-proclaimed) No. 1 Senior Citizen barback at the shows. Tom was not a “music guy”, but he never missed a show and was usually the first one there to set up and the last one to leave at the end of the night. He was one of the unsung heroes of those shows.
Tom passed away doing one of the things he loved most: He was fishing in New Hampshire with his kids. He would come back every year, bragging that his kids out-fished him! Tom loved Doug and Sarah, and we’re all sending them love and good vibes.
I am going to miss driving down his street, on my way back from the liquor store, and hoping I would see him sitting on this porch, and then stopping to have a beer with him.
Ride easy, Coach Tom. Ride easy.
