Obituary of Robert H. Thomsen

After a brief illness, Robert Thomsen of Maplewood, New Jersey, peacefully passed away on February 16th.

Robert was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Jane, with whom he shared 50 wonderful years in Maplewood. He was a loyal friend to many and a proud father figure to his “son,” Paolo M. He is also survived by his loving sister, Carol Smallwood of Virginia.

Robert began his career in banking and real estate appraisals before settling into the role of Property Maintenance Inspector for the Township of Maplewood. His dedication to the community extended far beyond his professional work. For decades, he served as Chair of the Rent Guidelines Board, thoughtfully guiding decisions that impacted residents throughout the township.

Robert truly loved Maplewood. He was widely known as the “go-to” person for all things Maplewood — from its development and rich history to its unique cultural and social fabric. His knowledge, pride, and deep commitment to the town left a lasting imprint on the community he cherished.

A devout Catholic, Robert faithfully served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph’s Church in Maplewood. His faith was an important part of his life and reflected in the kindness and generosity he showed to others.

Affectionately known as “RT,” Robert will always be remembered for his warmth, steadfast friendship, and his signature way of offering advice — often wrapped in a well-told story to gently make his point. His presence, wisdom, and compassion will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

As per Robert’s request, he will be laid to rest privately with his beloved wife, Jane.
