Obituary of Wingrove Joseph

Obituary for Wingrove “Winnie” Montgomery Joseph

Wingrove “Winnie” Joseph was born on April 16, 1946, in Montserrat, W.I., to Wycliffe Joseph and Delores Joseph (nee – Grant). Though born in Montserrat, he grew up in Antigua, W.I. with his parents and his siblings Velma “Vel”, Wesley “Wes”, and Victoria “Vicky”.

Winnie’s early childhood was marked by curiosity, resilience, and a deep love for people—qualities that would follow him throughout his life. His education and life experiences shaped him into a man who valued knowledge, connection, and the power of knowing the right thing to do at the right time. As he grew older, he carried with him a sharp mind and a remarkable ability to navigate life with wisdom that often amazed those around him.

Throughout his adult years, Winnie lived in various places across Ohio, North Carolina and South Carolina, forming friendships, building community, and touching lives wherever he went. No matter where he lived, he remained deeply connected to his family, especially his nieces and nephews, who held a special place in his heart. Every single one of them was his “favorite niece or favorite nephew” as he always said.

Winnie was a loving soul—a trait he undoubtedly inherited from his mother. He was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation. Every summer, without fail, he made sure the children in the family were fully equipped with school supplies. It didn’t matter what anyone said, once Winnie made up his mind, there was no changing it. His generosity was unwavering, and his love was steadfast.

We will miss his famous five second phone calls—just long enough to check in, and say “let me talk to you later,” and hang up, only to call the next person on his list. He made his rounds faithfully, making sure everyone felt remembered. Even as the years passed, Winnie remained sharper than most, always knowing exactly who to call and how to get things done. His resourcefulness was legendary.

We will miss the laughter, the joy, and the light he brought into our lives. As we sit in the heaviness of this loss, we find comfort in knowing that he is now at peace. There will be no more mourning, crying, or pain. These tears we shed today are not only for sorrow but also for celebration—celebrating a life well lived and a home going journey to heaven.

For it is written in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”  Winnie has found that rest.

Winnie is resting in heaven, where he is reunited with his beloved parents, his cherished sister Vel, and his brothers-in-laws Linden, Julian and Philip “Chappy”, rejoicing and surrounded by the angels in eternal peace.

Winnie leaves to cherish his memory:  Brother Wesley (Connie) and Sister Victoria “Vicky”, Nieces Chartrisse (Christopher)  Natolia, Christy (John), Cathy ( Errol ) ; Nephews Whitfield (Cindy), Joseph “Joey” (Ashana), Great Nieces Adrianna, Kayla, Lucy, Kedi; Great Nephews Mylen, Byron, Deondre, Jaelen, Kaden, Christopher, Adrian, Jayden, Mikhai;  Family:  Lydia, Angela, Christina, Marc, Tanise, Julian “JJ”, Lydia Jr., Zach, Mari; Host of Friends, Relatives and Cousins: Ms. Nannie, Ms. Joyce, Randy, Con, Vernon, Lesroy, Carl, Veronica, Grantly, Juan, Enoch, Lowell, Gisselle, Philbert, Caroline, Uncle Rudolph, the entire Johnson Family, Dawn, Jamal, and a whole host of beloved relatives, friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ.

You will forever be in our hearts, Winnie. Your love, your laughter, and your unforgettable presence will remain with us always.
