Obituary of Philip J. Mistretta

Philip J. Mistretta, 79, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and fisherman, passed away on Saturday, April 4, at St. Barnabas Hospital.

Born in Newark, NJ, Philip became a lifelong resident of Maplewood prior to starting his educational journey at Seth Boyden Elementary, continuing at Maplewood Junior High and graduating from Columbia High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University and later received his master’s degree from St. Elizabeth University in 2006. 

Mr. Mistretta dedicated 38 years to education as an elementary school teacher in the Millburn public school system, making a lasting impact on his students before his retirement.

Drafted in 1967, he proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1968-1969 during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded a Purple Heart and The Air Medal.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, JoAnn E. Mistretta (nee Kozlowski). Philip is survived by his loving sons, Nicholas and Michael Mistretta, and his cherished grandson, Evan Mistretta.

The family will be receiving friends at  Preston Funeral Home 153 South Orange Avenue, South Orange, NJ 07079 on Thursday June 11^th, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM

A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect Street, South Orange, on Friday June 12th at 10:00 AM.

In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that you take a friend fishing, share a tall tale about the "one that got away" at his service, or simply enjoy a quiet moment by the water in his memory. There is also the option to plant a tree in his name.
