Obituary of Marlene M. Haggerty

Marlene Margaret Haggerty (née Segrich), raised in Union City, New Jersey, was born on April 28, 1933, to Margaret and John Segrich. She lived a life defined by faith, family, intellect, generosity, and style.

Marlene graduated from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, PA and was proud of her accomplishments as one of the few women working in mathematics during that period of time. Early in her career, she worked at Bell Laboratories as its only female mathematician at that time, where she enjoyed recounting stories of collaborating alongside some of that era's most brilliant minds. 

On July 4, 1956, she married the love of her life, James Charles Haggerty. Together they built a remarkable life centered on their shared devotion to family and enriched by a love of travel that took them around the world over many decades.

Marlene was proud of her Croatian heritage, inherited through her father, who was born in Croatia. She was a gourmet cook whose joy was preparing memorable meals for family and friends. Her passions included fashion, entertaining, cooking, reading, and travel. In her earlier years, she hosted a cooking club with her friends, enjoyed golfing, and relished dining in New York City. A gracious hostess, she was known for her unforgettable gatherings that brought people together with warmth and elegance.

Those who knew Marlene will remember her sharp wit, generous spirit, and impeccable sense of style. Always adventurous and ahead of her time, after graduating head of her French class she traveled to France to further her studies. She carried herself with grace and confidence throughout her life, leaving a lasting impression on all who met her. 

Above all else, Marlene's greatest loves were her husband, her children, and her faith. She lived each day with a deep devotion to God and drew strength and purpose from her relationship with the Lord. Her faith guided her actions, her generosity, and her unwavering commitment to those she loved.

Marlene devoted her life to her eight children: Marianne Haggerty; Meg (Joseph) Gaul; Thomas Haggerty, predeceased; Sally (Frank) Mulcahy; Terrence Haggerty; Nancy (Jonathan) Gordon; James Haggerty; and John Jude (Jenny) Haggerty. She is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of immense pride and joy.

Marlene's legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the traditions she nurtured, the faith she embodied, and the countless memories she created. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

The Funeral  Mass will be held at Christ the King Church, 16 Blue Mill Road, New Vernon, NJ on Monday, June 29th at 11:00 AM. Entombment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ.
