Our kids played together on Emerald's travel lacrosse team years ago. Most of the kids & parents were from Springfield and were so welcoming to those of us on the outside. Mike always had a fun/kind word or a quick pep talk with a little guidance tossed in. He had such a nice way about him. Sending sincere condolences on behalf of my son, Robby, and myself. Thinking of all of Mike’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We send our deepest condolences and know that Mike will be remembered and sincerely missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mike was one of our son’s football coaches in eighth grade—the first year Millburn and Springfield combined into one team. From the very beginning, it was clear that Mike and the other coaches welcomed our two Millburn players with open arms. That spirit of inclusion spread throughout the entire team, creating an experience our son, and our family, will always remember.
Mike led not only with dedication but with kindness, humility, and genuine care for others. He showed by example what it means to be a leader and how to make everyone feel like they belong.
May his memory be a blessing to his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.

My sincere condolences on the passing of Mike. I’m still in disbelief. There are no words to describe a loss like this or provide any comfort. For the past eight years, Mike has helped me navigate through my own personal loss. He just had a way about him that made me worry less.
According to Mike “everything‘s OK don’t worry“.
I could call him on my cloudiest day and he’d make me feel like the sun was shining. I will miss his confidence, his strength and encouragement. May the love and memories he left behind provide a legacy that lives on forever.

I met Mike in 1980 when we were both entering 7th grade at Maplewood Middle School. We became fast friends. From 8th grade through most of high school, every morning my mom would drop me off in at the Dzikowski house at 12 Lincoln Place on her way to work. With both MMS and Columbia High School a short walk away. We did everything together. We were inseparable. Football being a common thread that wove its way from Pop Warner through high school.
We were uniquely intertwined in each other’s lives. Mike would routinely be my plus one on family camping trips and I would never miss a weekend cookout on Lincoln Place. My parents parented him. His parents parented me.
We got our first “real” job together in the summer of 1985 went we worked for the Zavocki Paving Company. Looking back it was comical: two 17 year olds racing up steep driveways with wheelbarrows full of hot asphalt seeing who could do it faster. Competition, whether athletically, academically or apparently in the world of paving, was not an uncommon theme in our relationship.
A simpler time, unburdened and carefree. My memories of my childhood during those years are inexorably intertwined with Mike. A lifetime of memories, all of which have come flooding back through my mind since I heard of Mike’s passing. He was taken from his family and this world, much too soon. It is a lesser place without his presence. The void is unfillable. Rest easy friend.

Thank you for bringing me into your life, both professionally and personally. As most of us know, for you, there was no difference. I’ll always cherish the time we spent together in the empty Covid office. The love you have for your family, friends and clients was amazing to see. For us, we mourn a man who came into our lives in March of 1999 during the Big East basketball tournament. What a passion he had for basketball and all sports memorabilia. With his boundless energy he threw many parties, having an abundance of food, games and soft (LOL)music. His pleasure came from watching family and friends enjoying the fruits of his labor. How he loved and cared for his wife Carrie and sons Garett and Gavin. While fighting his health battle he spent months compiling articles and pictures for a scrapbook he gave as a cherished Christmas gift. We pray you rest in peace. We so miss being loved by the vortex that was our son-in-law Mike.

Dear Mike (Papá),
You were a truly special man. Your warmth, charisma, and genuine kindness drew people to you, and you had a remarkable way of making everyone feel welcome. Your hard work, determination, and perfectionism made you take great pride in everything you did. (Except that you were no handyman!) Lol!
More importantly, you were incredibly generous. You gave freely without ever expecting anything in return because bringing happiness to others was simply who you were. That was especially true for the boys and girls on the many teams you coached. My friend, you invested your time, energy, and heart into helping others, and your selfless spirit touched countless lives and changed the paths of many of the young people you coached.
Although you are no longer with us physically, the memories, lessons, and love you shared will remain in our hearts forever. Your spirit and the wonderful memories you gave us will always live on in our hearts and minds. I know you will be watching over Carrie, Gavin, and Garret, guiding your family through life’s journey.
Your legacy is one of selfless giving—offering yourself to others without regret and without expecting anything in return.

To my sweet uncle, as you would call me “my sweet niece.” Over the last couple of days I’ve finally been able to process your passing and the legacy that you left behind, not only in the small town of Springfield but to every person you’ve ever met.
In your last moments you were surrounded by your loved ones, and I know you were able to hear all the sweet messages we whispered into your ear. While I’m emotionally torn that you passed, a part of me is okay that you are in a better, and more comfortable place where you are finally no longer in pain. As I left the hospital I was flashed with 18 years of memories with you. When I was 10 and I would throw up a horrible basketball shot and you would respond “that’s ugly.” To this past year when I would make you plates of food and God forbid I placed a mushroom on your plate because you would yell at me, “Ski don’t do mushrooms.”
To my Aunt Carrie, you are a true testament to what you vowed when you said “in sickness and in health.” You showed him, and us, what unconditional love truly looks like. You stood by him through every challenge with patience and comfort, something that few are fortunate enough to experience and I know he was grateful for you.
To my Nana and Papa, especially Nana, your unwavering love and strength have shown us all what a parent’s heart can give. Nana, you were by his side every day no matter the circumstances and gave up your life to give your all to him. I can’t put into words how thankful I am for you two. You two are so strong and I need you to know with all the love surrounding him, you two were the ones who created that.
Uncle Mike, I’ll never be able to fill your void. But I will make sure to make you proud, whether it’s through my education, softball, or any life achievements. I know you will be cheering me on.

Mike, one of our many phone calls for the lacrosse board we were talking about your speech you were working on for the boys. You asked me what I thought about this quote… Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail… I said oh my god I love that quote it’s perfect and I have it hanging on my wall in my den. I hope your new path in heaven is glorious. I will forever cherish our friendship, all our time together, all our countless conversations, that speech, all you did for every kid in Springfield, you were the best of the best. Michael,,, We have experienced no greater pain than your leaving us so early. Thank you for all the years we did have together Son. Thank you for being such a good, loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle, cousin, nephew and, good, loyal friend. Thank you for being so brave and optimistic these past 2 ½ years.
