In the forty-some years I crossed paths with her at St. Stephen's, I can't remember Mrs. Dorn ever not smiling. She always seemed to have a little extra energy and enthusiasm for brightening others' days, especially if good food was involved. I remember from-scratch orange Jell-O she made for my father when he had cancer--by far the best part of a "liquid diet"--and crowder peas she cooked for the homeless--my first exposure to this Southern delicacy. Though she never said so, her philosophy seemed to be, "Get the cooking right, and the rest will follow." Of course there's much more to her than an apron and a wooden spoon; I will not soon forget her cheerful, charmingly accented voice, ebullient curiosity, and tireless generosity. My condolences to Mr. Dorn and the rest of the family.
