I am stunned and saddened to learn (belatedly) about Brian’s passing. We worked directly together for many years running weekly basketball practices and annual tournaments for Special Olympics at NYU’s Coles Gym. Brian was a pleasure and extremely efficient. He always went out of his way to accommodate our athletes and program. He enlisted students to volunteer and assist us. He was also a nice and humane person to deal with. I remember when his daughters were born. He was insanely proud and glowed when he spoke of them.
Brian Mecca was a wonderful addition to our world. The coaches and athletes of Manhattan’s Special Olympics program send our deepest condolences to his family and coworkers. He is and will be missed.

I have Brian to thank for expanding my love, knowlede & curiosity of literature. He wrote and directed me in many plays along with his buddy D Cook. He gave me a Jack Kerouac play that he wrote when I moved to California. Flight of a Desolation Angel. I had hoped to perform it one day. My extensive research into Kerouac led me into an expansive world of incredible writers and artists. Brian!! I have you to thank for opening my eyes and heart. You were so talented and I have missed your inspiration for years. You are forever in my soul. Rest in peace old friend. I am so sad right now but I know you will be with me when I open up another book.

Brian,
Never really lost touch over the course of 55 years or so. From the days of playing football in the snow on Sylvan ave to discussing what life had both brought and taught us over the course of those years, we always managed to stay connected. My best friend in childhood with whom I spent every day playing, talking, commiserating, laughing, and just being kids.
I have thought about our friendship always through the years, and your passing to a better place has brought me back to images in my head I haven't had in ages. The gang on Midland ave was a close knit bunch. We had each other's backs and struggled daily with our home lives, which seemed so distant from others we knew in Rye. People laugh when you say you grew up on the "poor" side of town in Rye, but we did and the lessons it taught us got me through some very difficult times.
Your presence will be missed by your family and friends without a doubt. But the light you lit while here on earth will never be extinguished. Your words and deeds live on through your daughters and friends. You will not be forgotten.
Continue your journey now...there is still much to learn.
Chris

Brian, I remember long talks with you about poetry and history after you and my dear friend Lisa got married way back when. You impressed me so much with your wit and knowledge, and hunger to know more. You will be sorely missed. May you live on forever in the hearts and minds of those who love you! Very warmly, Alyssa
