Betty,
I am so grateful to have known you and to have had the opportunity to spend time with you and Kristen in your home, especially this year. Thank you for welcoming me with your love and incredible smile, and for allowing me to have a peak into your interesting and brave life. I know you as a Mother, a friend, a feminist, a singer, and an artist. You found connection and fulfillment in both your religious beliefs and the metaphysical world. Your capacity and tenacity to pursue such diverse interests inspire me and I will always remember you. Thank you, and may you rest in beauty and peace until we meet again.

Sometimes we find that we have more in common than we realize with the people we cross paths with…. So it was with me and Betty. We became acquainted several years ago in our Thursday night craft club, but it was over the cribbage board where we really connected. We enjoyed our occasional games with tea and dessert, or even better, a pasta lunch at the nearby Italian Deli. Betty got a real kick out of having our mascot, “Flora” (a stuffed toy skunk) preside over our games, which were often shared with our mutual friend, Marie. Another point in common emerged when our conversations took a new turn in recent months.
It’s hard to watch those we care for undergo suffering, but it is good when we know they are at ease in mind and spirit. I was delighted to hear Betty speak of being at ease as she anticipated leaving this world. When I asked her to tell me more, she spoke of her faith in Jesus, whose presence had been constant, and a comfort to her through many ups and downs of her life. I’m glad to know we shared this faith. Though I will miss Betty and the laughs we shared playing cribbage, it comforts me to know that she is now at rest and peace.
