A Prosecutor’s prosecutor, an Essex County Prosecutor’s Office legend and mentor to many Assistant Prosecutors, initial head of the Special Prosecutions Section established by then Prosecutor George Schneider, too many prominent trials to count, a great trial lawyer, teacher and friend, among the most competitive people I have known and in everything he did, from jury trials to softball games; will always be thankful for his friendship and his insight and support while I was learning how to try cases. He will be much missed and thought of long after his passing. Condolences to Brian, Ed, Tom and to all of John’s family. Remember the softball games in the Essex County Lawyer’s League, the pizza and beer at one tavern or another after games, an occasional round of golf, so many good memories. Rest in Peace,

Judy,
So sad to learn that John has passed.
We worked together, side by side, for seven formative years (1970-1977) as ECPO assistant prosecutors.
Always interesting, smart, ethical, thorough and easy going. Mostly complex, mysterious, confidential wiretap matters. Tireless investigator. Impressive trial attorney and fun at our office softball games.
A notably devoted Dad, positive force and credit to our profession. He was a good and decent man.
Lucky to have gotten to know him.
Warmest condolences to you and your family. May John now Rest In Peace.

John was my classmate at Holy Cross where he earned the respect of all who knew him. Friendly, humorous and low-keyed were some of his attributes. My sympathy to his family.

So very sorry to hear of John’s passing. I got know him through our softball games at the ECPO. Although our work paths rarely passed, we would often meet in the hallway and talk shop. To a new investigator his sage advise and insights about investigative protocols and prosecutions were always welcomed. John was a great guy who had a unique understanding of the ECPO’s mission in an unassuming and humble manner.
It was my good fortune to work with him and call him a friend.
My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

John was a great guy with a keen sense of humor. A big baseball fan and umpire. I was able to watch a few games with him and the Cape May County Prosecutor some years ago. Also fortunate to watch him in court. My condolences to the entire Matthews family. John will be missed but not forgotten.

We are so very sorry for your loss. When I think of Mr. Matthews the first word that comes to mind is pride. Whether it was the smile on his face during visits to Susan at GWU many years ago or his pure love for his grandchildren, the pride and love he felt for his family was always so very obvious. Please know that we are thinking of all of you during this sad and difficult time.

We are all very sorry to learn of John’s passing. He was a mentor, confidant and friend to countless young prosecutors of which I was fortunate to be one. You could always count on John for sound advice and encouragement, often in the midst of a contentious trial when his words meant a lot. Simply a giant in our prosecution family who will be revered by all whose career he helped. Rest in Piece Our Friend! God Bless you and your family.
