Douglas E. Smiley, 42, of Maplewood NJ, formerly of Brooklyn NY and Windsor NJ, passed away on Saturday February 27, 2021 at home surrounded by family. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Doug worked in music marketing for more than two decades, beginning his music career at age 19. Before joining Universal Music Group’s Verve Records as Marketing Director in 2020, he worked on several Grammy award winning and platinum selling records. He was instrumental in the careers of a wide range of artists including Major Lazer, Cold War Kids, St. Vincent, Death Cab For Cutie, Nelly, Gnarls Barkley, Mos Def, Santigold, Miike Snow, Justice, and Cyndi Lauper.

Doug received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from The New School University. He previously attended Berklee School of Music in Boston.

He didn’t just study and market music, Doug created it. He released music under the aliases Shakeyface and Subdisco. His DJing skills were the stuff of legend.

The only thing Doug loved more than music was his family.

He married Amy Butterworth Smiley, a childhood friend turned love-of-his-life, in her parent’s backyard in 2001. At their wedding in Amy's parent’s backyard, the wedding party wore FUBU Tuxedos and hot pink dresses.  Boy Scouts served appetizers, guests bounced on a trampoline and the happy couple emerged to the hilarious track by Handsome Boy Modeling School in which Chris Elliot exclaims "Oh my G-d, They're Gorgeous" repeatedly.

The couple welcomed daughter Daisy in 2012 and son Miles in 2014. Doug absolutely loved being Daisy and Miles’ dad. After spending his childhood in New Jersey, he returned to the state to raise his own family in 2017.

Doug was predeceased by his father Raymond Smiley. He is survived by his loving wife Amy Butterworth Smiley, his two children Daisy and Miles, devoted mother Sara Jane and brother Dave Smiley.
