John shed his light on the world through his brilliant smile and warm quiet ways. It was always a pleasure to run into him as he gave off a feeling of “ hail fellow, well met “. And he was seldom alone, as he traveled with the people he loved who so dearly cherished him. I know his health suffered. But he seemed unflaggingly both optimistic and realistic. I am very sad that he has gone so early. My sadness is for his family who I know miss him terribly.

For many years John was the nice guy up the block. Then one day at a block party someone, possibly his friend Steve Hughes, showed up with a Residents tee shirt. They were an obscure SF art group who wore giant eyeball full head masks. I was surprised and started to talk to John about music. Who knew that would be the beginning of a great friendship? Subsequently, we discovered that we had both worked about ten years apart at NYC Office of Management and Budget and had mutual friends. Then we discovered that we and our wives were dedicated fans of MaplewoodStock and made a concerted effort to get to the park early to get a spot for my canopy. Yes, we were the last to go both days. The most optimistic guy I ever me. John really got what life was about family and friendship and music. I can’t carry a note in a bucket, but we really shared harmony and for that I will always be grateful. Man, I will miss you. MaplewoodStock won’t be the same.
