Elizabeth B. Degnan (nee Bryson) formerly of South Orange passed away on Friday, Oct 1, 2021.Born in Strabane, Co. Tyrone, Ireland on December 22, 1934 to Joseph and Susan Bryson, she was raised in Castelfin, Donegal, with 11 siblings.
Liz completed her midwifery and nurse’s training in England before emigrating to the United States in 1964. She practiced nursing for over fifty years at St Michael’s Hospital in Newark, NJ, St Barnabas Hospital and Inglemoor Nursing Home in Livingston, NJ. She spent her career caring for newborns and the elderly.
Married in Castlefin, Ireland in 1968 to her devoted husband John Otto Degnan, she lived on Village Road and Vose Avenue in South Orange, NJ for nearly fifty years.
Liz was a devout Catholic and active parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Church for over fifty years. She volunteered as sacristan and eucharistic minister and participated in a number of Catholic organizations such as the Rosary Society, Bailey Seton League, Women’s Guild and Serra Club.
Liz was predeceased by her husband Otto, and siblings Charles, Patrick, Aileen, James and Bernadette. Liz leaves behind her sons: John (Nicole), Joseph (Annie) and six grandchildren: Jack, Brynn, Connor, Vivian, Daniel and James. She is also survived by six siblings: Phyllis, Sadie, Margaret, Alacoque, Jacinta and Anthony.
Services to honor Liz’s life will be held on Monday, October 4th between 4pm -8pm at Preston Funeral Home 153 South Orange Ave, South Orange. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St, South Orange on Tuesday, Oct 5th at 9:30 AM. Interment at Gate Of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. In lieu of flowers donations to Our Lady of Sorrows, South Orange, NJ would be appreciated.
