Bill Smith, to me, has always represented the best of Seton Hall--a man who carried his erudition lightly, had a good sense of humor, and was humane and generous. The University, and the world at large was a better place for his presence. His death is a loss but also a cause of celebration for a life well lived and for all he gave, by way of knowledge, wisdom, and kindness to his students, his colleagues, and, indeed, everyone he came into contact with. He will be missed.

On my first day at Seton Hall I realized I was placed in the wrong Class. I had to drop a class and find a new one. So I walked over to my Dad’s office in Fahy and asked for help. He took me up to see Professor Smith who immediately signed me into his Intro to Philosophy. That was the beginning of my philosophy minor and several classes with him. I appreciated his amazing intelligence and his subtle humor in class which most students didn’t get because they were not always listening!! He was a great man. My deepest sympathies to his wonderful family.

Bill was very much a gentleman. I enjoyed teaching with him for many years – and enjoyed very much getting to know Joyce, Kerry and his whole family. He was a man of honor, wisdom and Catholic faith - may he enjoy the vision of the Lord.

I arrived on the Seton Hall campus in 1972 as a 26-year-old newly minted PhD. Even though I was in Psychology, on one end of the campus and Bill in Philosophy, on the other end, Bill was extremely supportive during my early years. He and Joyce were in a tradition of Seton Hall couples that made it their business to make newcomers feel comfortable and welcome. On this Thanksgiving Day, I mourn the loss of Bill but give thanks for having know and worked with him.

It is with deep sorrow that I learned about Bill’s passing away. I met Bill in the 1980s at Saint Peter’s College, nowadays St. Peter’s University, and thereafter we became friends. I did not know back then that we were going to become colleagues here at SHU. When my friend and colleague David Connor informed me about Bill’s passing, I replied to him that Bill was a good person and an honorable man who had a worthwhile life. I was truly privileged to share so many good years of my life with him in the Department of Philosophy. I can only say that, while I do not know if there is an afterlife, if there were to be one, I would very much like to meet Bill one more time and continue our friendship. Rest in peace my friend, and my deep condolence to the family.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Bill Smith. He was a warm and gentle presence in Fahy Hall, and he represented the best of what an academic could be. May he rest in peace.

I got to know Bill while on university committees together. He was patient, reasonable and would periodically utter witty or whimsical phrases to fit the occasion. He and Joyce were a couple to admire. May he be enjoying eternal rest. Frank

For many years, Bill was a cornerstone of the philosophy department at Seton Hall University, for which I, and I'm pretty sure, his other colleagues, are grateful. He was always conscientious; in his classes, and in service to the department, college, and university. He was proud of Seton Hall, as well he should. Bill was an ideal colleague--courteous, friendly, patient, sensible. To me, he was more than a colleague, he was a friend who I will dearly miss.

Bill inspired as well as instructed. He was a gentleman-scholar whose kindness opened the minds and hearts of his students and colleagues. We give thanks for his gracing Seton Hall for so many years. His memory will live one.
