I met Carolyn about ten years ago when I was working in Magnificat home a residence for low-income women. Carolyn and many other men and women came to visit and help Magnificat Home, 119 Clerk Street, in Jersey City. Carolyn came to me while everyone was taking a tour of the house with Matt Laracy the owner and founder of Magnificat home.
She asked questions about how many women we have, how they are doing, what they need the most, what items we need to operate the home if donated, what work can be done if volunteers come to the house and more questions. I immediately liked Carolyn and connected with her quickly. Before she left she made sure to as about my two boys and myself because she heard that I am a single mom and an immigrant raising two boys facing the hardship that many women faces. She asked how she can help and support me. I asked her for some books that I needed for the boys. She dropped them the next day. My children and I was so excited. She told my children “Education is the only way out” they still remember it as her quote.
She always came with donations for the women in Magnificat Home and with things that my boys asked from books to clothing to hats which my boys asked a special hat that popes up the ear when pressing the paws. It was a Christmas gift. Then early one snowy morning she dropped off a big Christmas tree for the Magnificat home then my boys called her Santa’s Helper, I can still remember the smile on her face. My boys and I adored her running to the door when ever she came and gave her a hug.
One day she asked my boys what they needed, and my older sun Joe asked for a history books and my younger son Alazar said he wants to take a violine lessons. She told us she will think about that. The boys said to each other “is she going to ask Santa?”. She called me back the next day to say she found Joe’s books and that she and Mr. Rummel will pay the violine lesson for Alazar. She made their dream come true. She and Mr. Rummel paid his lessons for a long time until he was comfortable to play on his own. if it was not for her and her beloved husband, he would never have had the chance to play violine. I could still remember the pleasure and happiness in her voice whenever we sent her video of Alazar playing the violine music! Imagine how happy she made my children and I supporting us to become educated in many ways. we still have All her Christmas cards with family pictures on them.
She was a loving hugging and beautiful spirit. We will always remember her with warm love in our heart and smile on our face.
Our condolences to her loving family and to everyone who knows her.
We will always miss our dear friend Carolyn with the hope to see her again when it is time for us to go home.
With lots of love to her and to her family,
Mibrak, Joe and Alazar.

Carolyn was my chairperson for several years at SHU. After she retired we had a great adventure taking students to Ireland for a study abroad trip. She was an amazing travel companion and such a role model for our students. We arrived in Ireland on Florence Nightingale’s birthday May 12, and celebrated the ritual of the blessing of hands with the soon to be novice nurses with a local Irish parish priest in the home of my dear friend Oanagh O’Neill in Dalkey Ireland. Carolyn planned the ceremony bringing candles and oils to rub on each of the students hands. It was a beautiful moment. This picture was with one of the nurses at Sligo General Hospital in Ireland. We traveled around Ireland visiting hospitals and schools of nursing. Carolyn was the best ambassador of nursing we have. She has been a wonderful friend, mentor and colleague. Rest in Peace dear Carolyn.

Q: What will you never forget about Carolyn?
A: Carolyn..
was more than a special friend, she was my teacher, mentor, and inspiration. One of the countless favorite memories that I have was when Carolyn, Mary Ann Rooney and I did the 3-day, 60 mile breast cancer walk from bear mountain to Central Park. This was shortly after Carolyn’s original diagnosis of breast cancer, at age 60! We even slept in sleeping bags in mobile tents. What an inspiration! You will be missed. Love, Wendy Budin

Carolyn was a member of the book group that I’ve led for over 20 years. She was one of the kindest, most thoughtful persons I have ever known. Even when things were tough for her she always asked about how I and members of my family were doing. She was a special person and I will miss her dearly.

Carolyn was my colleague at Seton Hall University since 1970. She was respected by all and sorely missed when she retired. She and I then became members of the same book club in 2009 and continuing. She was a wonderful hostess of most of our book club meetings during most of those years, participating in wonderful discussion, followed by lunches where we would catch up on each other’s’ lives.
She will be remember by former colleagues and book club members as always gracious, kind and even tempered. Carolyn will live on in the memories of all of us who were fortunate to know her. You will be sorely missed my friend.
