Obituary of Karen Mulvihill

Karen Mulvihill, 81, of Springfield passed away on May 30, 2023 at St. Barnabas Hospital, Livingston.

The Funeral Mass will be held at St. James The Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 45 S. Springfield Ave, Springfield on Monday June 5th at 10AM. Visitation will be held at Preston Funeral Home 153 South Orange Ave South Orange, NJ on Sunday from 2-6PM. Entombment to follow at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union.

Karen was born in Newark to Frances and Albert Saldutti.  The family moved to Short Hills when she was twelve with her younger sister Andrea.  After graduating Millburn High School, she went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in teaching from Penn State.  Then she continued her pursuit of higher education by receiving a Master’s Degree in Spanish from Rutgers University.  Karen was a Spanish teacher for over 30 years, first at Barringer High School in Newark and then at Cranford High School. During this time, Karen met and fell in love with Edward J. Mulvihill.  They were married in 1990 and have spent the last 30 plus years living happily in Springfield.  They enjoyed traveling together, cooking and testing their luck down in AC.   During her retirement, Karen continued learning by taking French classes and meeting monthly with other retired teachers.  Never one to sit still, she swam almost daily at the Summit YMCA.  Karen enjoyed gardening and went on to became a Master Gardner for Union County.  Karen also enjoyed spending time with her large extended family.

Karen is survived by her husband Edward J. Mulvihill, sister Andrea Kilby (John), nieces Claudia DeRosa, Andrea Kilby, Karen-Jean Kilby & Alexandra Kilby, three grand nephews and one grand niece.

In lieu of flowers donations to American Cancer Society P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 would be appreciated.
