Obituary of Charles S Sangree

Charles Spahr Sangree passed away at the age of 92 on October 7, 2017 after a brief illness. The son of the Rev. Milton and Jean (Spahr) Sangree, he was born in Brooklyn, grew up in western New York and graduated from Wellsville High School in 1942. Charles spent one year at Haverford College before serving in the United States Army during World War II. He later returned to complete his studies in philosophy at Haverford College, where he graduated in 1949. Charles received his Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in 1952 and Doctor of Ministry from Andover Newton Theological School in 1975. Married to Elizabeth (Klausmann) in 1956, he served as the pastor of the United Church of Christ in Woodhaven, New York and First Congregational U.C.C. in Holliston, Massachusetts for over 30 years. He and Betty then lived on Cape Cod and Sanibel Island, where he enjoyed spending time with his family playing tennis, swimming, playing basketball and cribbage. In recent years, he lived in Maplewood, New Jersey at Winchester Gardens and was an active participant in Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church. In addition to his beloved wife of 61 years, he is survived by his son Harry Sangree and his wife Lydia and their children Lisa and Stephen Sangree of New Providence, New Jersey; his son Paul Sangree and his wife Irene Bagdoian and their daughter Anna of Westborough, Massachusetts; and his son David Sangree and his wife Laura and children Paul and Grace of Lakewood, Ohio. He is also survived by his sister Anne Parke of Alexandria, Virginia; his brother Huyett Sangree and his wife Gail of Waterbury, Connecticut; and his sister Jenny Stoner and her husband David of Craftsbury, Vermont. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and a legion of friends. A memorial service will be held at the Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church, 600 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood, New Jersey on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. A reception will follow.
