Obituary of John J. Laverty Sr.

 

John J. Laverty, Sr. 92, beloved husband of Bette (nee Dunigan) passed away on August 3, 2023 surrounded by family.

 

Visitation will be held at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home 2122 Millburn Avenue, Maplewood, NJ on Tuesday, August 8th from 4-8 PM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Avenue Short Hills on Wednesday, August 9th at 10:00 AM. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.  

John was born in Elizabeth, NJ and had lived in Millburn for 83 years before moving to Union nine years ago. Upon his 1949 graduation from Millburn High School, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving until 1953.  In January of 1954 John joined the Millburn Police Department and retired in 1985 with the rank of Captain.

 

In addition to his wife of 65 years John is survived by his children John J. Laverty Jr., Sharon Jones (Peter), Steven Laverty (Angelica), Mary Alice Savulich (Stephen), William Laverty (Anita), Keith Laverty and Shawn Laverty (Kimberly); sister Honor Kammerer; his grandchildren, Samantha, Ryan and Brett Jones, Joseph (Mariam), Harrison and Reed Laverty, Madison Miller (Tyler), Corinne Savulich, Kaitlin, Caroline, Julia and Patrick Laverty, Aidan and Connor Laverty; his great-granddaughter, Charlotte Laverty. John was predeceased by his parents Della and Joseph McCabe and sisters Rosemary Zimmerman and Catherine Schanz.


In lieu of flowers donations to American Legion Guy Bosworth Post # 140, Millburn, NJ 07041 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905 would be appreciated.
