Obituary of Steven A. Potts

Steven A. Potts departed this life on September 6, 2023. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, on January 3, 1952 to the late Stuckey Potts, Jr. and Christine E. Potts.

Steven was raised in Newark and attended Barringer High School. He later moved to South Orange, New Jersey. After graduating, he worked at Bamberger’s department store before beginning a successful career with the United States Postal Service. He retired in September 2019 after 36 years of continuous, loyal, and conscientious service.

Steven was predeceased by his parents and brother, Lamont “Joe” Potts. He leaves to cherish his memory his brother Kevin Potts, sisters Evelin Potts and Bernadette Lumley, sister-in-law TiaJuanna Potts, nephew Lamont Potts Jr., and niece Keir Bristol. He is also fondly remembered by his close friends, referred to as his “crew”: Charrisse, Dwayne, Giselle, Glen, Joe, Raleigh, Roy, and Walt. He was a quiet soul with a big heart and deeply loved his family and friends.

Steven was fondly nicknamed “Big Steve” for his leadership, dedication, friendship, and father-like qualities. He always came through for his loved ones and would give sound advice and the shirt off his back. He was a die-hard fan of the Los Angeles Rams football team and North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team. He would watch and talk about sports for hours on end. He was a collector of Michael Jordan memorabilia and baseball cards. He enjoyed all genres of music and collected vinyl albums and DVDs, leaving behind a massive collection of both.

Steven was very spiritual and practiced daily meditation, prayer and affirmations. He was hardworking and known for his discipline and focus. His favorite quote was “Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.”

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
