John J. Del Giorno, Sr., 90, passed away peacefully on October 19,2017. A member of “The Greatest Generation,” John dedicated his life to his family, and spent his career serving the people of the United States of America. John was born in New York, NY on June 24, 1927. He was raised in Jersey City, NJ with his brother Roger Del Giorno by their parents, Mary and Joseph DiNunzio. At the age of 17, John enlisted in the US Navy, and participated in the Battle of Okinawa aboard the USS Venango (AKA 82). His ship supported several amphibious assaults, endured numerous enemy attacks, rode through typhoons, and rescued survivors from the USS Bunker Hill. He was then assigned to Underwater Demolition Team 17 aboard the USS Blessman (APD 48) and later, the USS Hollis (APD 86). He was discharged in 1946 with the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign (with Two Stars), American Campaign, Philippine Liberation, and Victory medals.Following his Navy service, John began a civilian career with the United States Coast Guard eventually serving as the Director of Logistics, USCG Supply Center Brooklyn. In a career that spanned more than 47 years, John was instrumental in the support of USCG facilities and equipment worldwide. He also supervised the implementation and maintenance of the Omega and Loran-C marine navigation systems around the globe, and was key in the training and eventual transition to the host nations. He retired in 1994 as one of the most accomplished civilians to ever serve the USCG, having received the USCG Commandant’s Award and the US Department of Transportation Superior Achievement and Distinguished Career Service Awards. John raised his family in Union, NJ with his wife, Diane. He was active with their church and school, Holy Spirit. Family summers were spent in the Poconos, at the Nomahegan Swim Club in Westfield, and Thursday Night Bowling at the Four Seasons in Union. He loved the beach since his youth, and could frequently be found on weekends with his close friends at Sandy Hook. John leaves behind his son Richard R. Barr and son-in-law Wayne Gooding; his son John Del Giorno II and daughter-in-law Cristina (Langone), and his grandchildren Annabel and Anthony Del Giorno and Giancarlo Carnevale. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, and their families. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with family on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at The Jacob A.
