James L. Murphy “Murph”, 80, of Union, NJ, passed away on November 18, 2024. Born and raised in South Orange, he moved to Union in 1992. Although he lived in Union, his heart belonged in South Orange.

James retired in 2011 after 42 dedicated years for the South Orange Department of Public Works. His strong work ethic and commitment to his community were hallmarks of his character.

An avid sports enthusiast, Murph was a passionate fan of the New York Mets, the New York Giants, and the Seton Hall Pirates, cheering on his teams with boundless enthusiasm. He enjoyed singing karaoke especially, “Kansas City” and “That’s Life.” He was a longtime member of the South Orange Elks. Bunny’s Sports Bar was where he met his loving wife, Betty, and celebrated many milestones with their family.

James will be remembered for his big heart, contagious smile, his strong love of family and friends, and his deep ties to the community.

He is survived by his wife Betty Kircher Murphy, two daughters Colleen Murphy (Kris Lehman) and Sarah Sypniewski (Dave) and granddaughter Samantha Sypniewski, sisters Helen Antoinette Nealy (Charles) Darrell Murphy, Marnette Murphy, and Rosemary Charles (Wooly) and caring nieces and nephews.
