Obituary of Kenneth M. Simpson

Kenneth M. Simpson, 88, of Wyckoff, New Jersey, left this world peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on December 23, 2024. Born and raised in Maplewood, NJ, Kenneth enjoyed a fulfilling life dedicated to his family, community, and country. In 1985, he and his beloved wife, Blanche T Simpson, who predeceased him in March 2024, made their home in Florham Park, NJ.

Kenneth proudly served his country as a Military Police Officer in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957, stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. Upon completing his service, he attended the Essex County Police Academy and briefly worked as a bookkeeper for Dunphey-Smith Company in Newark, NJ. In 1959, he embarked on a distinguished 27-year career with the Maplewood Police Department, where he rose through the ranks from patrolman to captain, earning numerous commendations for his exemplary service. Kenneth also served the police community as Vice President of the PBA Local 44 and as State Delegate of both the PBA Local 44 and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #70.  He retired in 1986, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and dedication to the community he so deeply loved.

After retiring from the police department, Kenneth continued his public service as a Code Inspector for the Maplewood Building Department from 1987 to 1999. His dedication to his community extended beyond his professional life by coaching youth baseball and basketball teams and serving as the committee captain for Maplewood's beloved Fourth of July fireworks. An accomplished athlete, he loved baseball, known as an outstanding catcher, and enjoyed bowling, often participating in local leagues. He was more than a police officer or code inspector; he was a mentor, a coach, and a friend to countless individuals. His quick wit and sense of humor remained with him throughout his life.

Beyond his public service, Ken's greatest love was his family. He cherished his 65-year marriage to Blanche, who predeceased him earlier this year. His love extended to his children, John, Lori (Gregg), and Jamie (Chris)—JonJon, Lulabelle, and Peanut as they were affectionately known. He was a proud grandfather to Gregg, Taylor (Paige), Grant (Kaitlin) Van Orden, and Chris, Bianca, and Matthew Kerr, and a great-grandfather to Kennedy Grace, Chase James, and Penelope Ann Van Orden.

His children share poignant memories: John remembers a fair and loving father who always told him how much he was loved, Lori recalls him as her "everything”, a constant presence in her life filled with mutual love and gratitude and Jamie describes a loving and caring father who adored his children and grandchildren. These sentiments reflect a father whose love was unwavering, a love that filled their lives with warmth, guidance, and joy.

Kenneth will be remembered for his steadfast commitment to his family, his community, and his country. He was described by many as a kind, gentle, and compassionate man with a heart of gold. He was a role model, a loyal friend, and a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Kenneth's selflessness, integrity, and gratitude were evident to all who knew him. He was proud of who he was, what he created, and the life he lived. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace, knowing how much he was loved and the lasting impact he makes in our hearts with his frequent words “I love my family”.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 3rd from 4-8 PM at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, 2122 Millburn Avenue, Maplewood, NJ. The Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 am on Saturday, January 4th at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Avenue, Short Hills, NJ. Entombment to follow in St Rose of Lima Cemetery.
