Obituary of Ingeborg Washam

Ingeborg (Inge) Schweimler Washam, of the original Leisure Village, Lakewood, died on May 22, 2006 at Ocean Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Furth Germany she survived the carpet-bombing of her hometown of Nuremberg, and the shattering loss of her parents, Jean and Anna Heublein in February 1942. She emigrated to Alexandria Virginia in 1953, working at McKenzie Hall at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. Inge was a 40 year resident of South Orange-Maplewood. She worked as a waitress/hostess at the old Claremont Diner in Verona, the Chanticler in Millburn, the Bun ‘N’ Burger in South Orange, and the Maplewood Diner. Inge attended Our Lady of Sorrows in South Orange and later at St. Luke’s in Toms River. She retired to Lakewood in 1998. She is survived by Patrick, her husband of 51 years, by her three daughters, Roseanne Smalley and her husband Ernie of Vermont, Patti Williams and her husband Mark Sr. of Vermont, and Heidi Baker and her husband Ron of New Jersey, and by her long lost brother, Karl Schweimler and his wife Lizzi of Nuremberg, and by her cherished sister-in-law, Eileen Washam Sabin, and Fred Washam. Also surviving are her adored grandchildren, Loren Smalley, Drew Smalley and Jay Smalley, Jennifer Williams Parker, Mark Williams, Jr., and Sarah Williams, and Annelise Baker and Russell Baker, and her beloved godchildren, Maggie and Michael Calabrese of South Orange. Inge was predeceased by her three sisters, Luftwaffe Lt. Hilde Klopfer in 1948, Irma Carbone in 1987 and Trudy Heublein in 1988, and her beloved sister-in-law, Sheila Washam Small in 1987. Among her dearest friends are Monsignors James Cafone, Robert Coleman and Manuel Cruz. Also, South Orange Village president William Calabrese, Catherine Dounis, Joe Daly of County Tipperary, Hannelore Heyeck, and Peter and Ursula Kniewasser of Nuremberg, whose valiant efforts enabled Inge to find her dear brother Karl after an amazing separation of sixty-one years! Friends and family are cordially invited to the Preston Funeral Home in South Orange on May 24th at 7-9 P.M. and on May 25th from 2-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. Funeral mass will follow on May 26th at 10:30 A.M. with interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hanover NJ.
