Leo A. Maffei, 77, of Toms River died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, in Toms River Community Hospital. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St., South Orange, on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. Teresas Cemetery, Summit. Visitation will be held at the Preston Funeral Home, 153 S. Orange Ave., South Orange, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. For more information or to send condolences, please visit prestonfuneralhome.net. Born in Maplewood, Mr. Maffei lived in South Orange before moving to Toms River 15 years ago. He was a water plant operator for the village of South Orange Water Department from 1970 to 1992 when he retired. Mr. Maffei served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948 and was a member of the VFW Post 10185 in Toms River. He was the beloved husband of Mary Smargiassi Maffei; the devoted father of Carl Maffei and Domenic Maffei and his wife, Claire; loving grandfather of Lucio Maffei, and dear brother of Thelma Caporasa. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Parkinsons Disease Association, N.J. Chapter, P.O. Box 214, Elizabeth, N.J. 07207 would be appreciated.
