Noble --- On Saturday, September 22, 2007, Joseph Veach Noble of Maplewood NJ died. His beloved wife Lois Cook Noble, his daughter Josette Gamble and her husband Norman, his stepsons Alan and Bruce Cartwright, and his grandchildren Barry Cartwright, Nicole Hernandez, Katherine Gamble Lydick, Theodore Gamble, and Lana Noble, survive him. His first wife Olive A.M. Noble and his sons Ashley and Laurence Noble predeceased him. In life, he served his home community of Maplewood NJ, and New York City, in many capacities. Maplewood responded by giving him the coveted Maple Leaf Award in 1987. He was the Director of the Museum of the City of New York from 1970-1985, where he produced shows, such as “Drug Scene”, that attracted and involved the average citizen. Along with former Mayor Koch, Joe Noble was instrumental in bringing the Treaty of Paris to NYC. As President of the American Association of Museums and as an author on art forgery and Greek antiquities, he insisted that a museum should be “More Than a Mirror to the Past”. This theme carried through his service to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1956-1070), and as officer, director or trustee of American Medallist Society, Brookgreen Gardens, Corning Museum of Glass, National Sculpture Society and Archeology Institute of America. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church, 600 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood, on Sat. Sept 29th at 10:00 AM. Internment Private. Visitation will be held at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home 2122 Millburn Ave, Maplewood NJ on Friday, 7-9 PM ONLY.
