WILLIAM J. DUFFY, M.D., KGCHS of Branchburg, formerly of Maplewood, and MONMOUTH BEACH
WILLIAM J. DUFFY, M.D., KGCHS of Branchburg, formerly of Maplewood, and Monmouth Beach, died Thursday, Jan. 10, at Rolling Hills Care Center, Lebanon. He was a vascular surgeon at St. Michael's Hospital, Newark for many years before retiring. He was a communicant of The Catholic Church of St. Ann, Raritan. He founded the Society of St. Michael the Archangel, West End in 1989. He invested as a knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem by John Cardinal O'Connor in St. Patrick's Cathedral in Oct. 1995. He elevated in rank to Knight Grand Cross of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem by His Excellency Henry J. Mansell, KCHS, Archbishop of Hartford, Conn. in St. Patrick's Cathedral in Sept. 2006. He was a graduate of Seton Hall College Class of 1943, Class President in 1941, and a member of the Pitching staff of the college baseball team. He was a graduate of New York University College of Medicine in 1945. He was an associate professor of surgery at N.J. College of Medicine; fellow of the American College of Surgeons; founding member of the American College of Abdominal Surgeons; fellow of the American College of Angiology Surgical Boards; Chief of Surgery at St. Michael's Medical Center, Newark; and member of the Board of Trustees and president of the staff at St. Michael's Medical Center, Newark. He was the recipient of the N.J. Medical Society Golden Merit Award for Distinguished Service in May 1995.
Born in Newark, he resided in Maplewood and Monmouth Beach before moving to Branchburg five years ago.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Catherine McGowan Duffy; Children William J. Duffy , Cathleen DeLorenzo, Eileen Schultz and Christine Duffy; and six grandchildren, Siobain, Katie, Christine, Laura, A.J., and Colleen.
Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday only at the Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home, 26 Main St., Lebanon. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Theodore Church, 855 Route 57, Port Murray. Interment will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Annandale.
