During my freshman year at Bloomsburg University, Ms. Cortes - Hwang was my professor for Spanish. I continued my studies in Spanish following a great experience in high school. We were just a few weeks into the semester (probably around Feb. 1981), when we discovered she was in an automobile accident on Interstate 80 near Hazleton. Since I lived in Hazleton and commuted to Bloomsburg, I was able to visit her in the hospital. I am glad I did. She did not return to Bloomsburg. The reason this comes up almost 40 years later is that I was speaking to my partner about this. Unfortunately, I am not one to keep in touch very well, but after I told this story, I decided to look up her name. In fact, I am hard - pressed to remember more than two or three names of professors from that time. This shows what a great impression this great lady left on a young man who really made few connections at school due to the fact that he drove in and out, held a job, and continued to work hard and graduate. I am currently a teacher in Philadelphia. God Bless Mrs. Cortes - Hwang.

Adriana Cortes Hwang was my professor at Shippensburg State College. She taught me so much about latinoamerica. Most importantly she opened my eyes to the world and fostered a lasting interest in those things outside my small sphere. She took me back to my roots and influenced the course of my life. Thank you professora. Con carino. Descanse en Paz.
