John J. Vogel, 77, of Sweetwater, N.J., beloved husband of the late Catherine J. (Morris) Vogel, died on May 24, 2008, after a lengthy illness. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral from the Preston Funeral Home, 153 South Orange Ave., South Orange, on Friday, May 30, at 9:30 a.m. Thence to Our Lady of Sorrows Church, South Orange, where a Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. Visiting hours are Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. For more information or to send condolences, please visit prestonfuneralhome.net Originally from Newark, John lived with his family in South Orange for 25 years before retiring to Sweetwater, Mullica Township, 13 years ago. After graduating from Seton Hall Prep, Class of 1948, he served proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. In 1953, John entered the 43rd class of the N.J. State Police Academy and became a N.J. State Trooper, badge No. 1235. Upon leaving the state police, John was a regional sales manager and a pioneer in the polypropylene industry for 35 years. John was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for nearly 40 years. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved cooking, boating, fishing, crabbing, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren. He will be missed by many people. John was the loving father of five children, Sharon Vogel of Elm, N.J., Catherine Vogel of Garwood, N.J., Lisa Vogel of Sweetwater, N.J., Madeline Neumann-Parmenter of Mays Landing, N.J., and John P. Vogel of Walnut Creek, Calif. He also leaves behind a sonin-law, Michael Parmenter, and daughter-in-law, Tonja Kujac-Vogel. John was predeceased by a son-in-law, Officer Keith E. Neumann. He is survived by his grandchildren, Matthew Hand, Forrest and Hunter Vogel, Catherine, John and Claire Parmenter. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Vogel of Waretown, N.J., and his sisters, Delores Clark of Huntsville, Ala., and Judy Busher of Whitehouse Station, N.J., and many other relatives and lifelong friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to Officer Keith E. Neumann Memorial Fund, 5941 Scranton Ave., Mays Landing, N.J. 08330 would be appreciated.
