Janet had a real penchant for the exotic - she once showed me castanets, taught me how to use them, and let me take them home so I could practice. This was thrilling stuff for a young girl living on Kent Island! At my very first piano lesson - I think I was 5 years old, she did not let me even see the piano. Instead, she put me in her office, draped my hands firmly over two oranges, and told me to practice holding my hands in that position.
Later, she acquired something I had only before seen on TV - a baby grand piano. What fun it was to play duets with her. And at recitals, I loved playing well enough to earn a smile from her.
At the Tim and Nine Price wedding, she appeared shocked when I credited her with expanding my horizons.
Robin, although we don't really know each other, please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. Whenever I sit at the piano, I remember her. She was truly an inspiring mentor during my formative years.
