Obituary of Myron J. Gordon

Myron J. Gordon. Born October 15, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY. Died peacefully July 5, 2010, at home in Summit, NJ. A long and distinguished academic career in Economics and Finance. Author of more than one hundred books and articles on topics including: the cost of capital and valuation of corporations; the regulation of public utilities; growth and security under welfare capitalism; and economic development in China. Known especially for the Gordon Growth Model, first published in 1959, and still extensively used by financial professionals in the valuation of common stock. Professor at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, since 1970, and Emeritus since 1985. Received B.A. from the University of Wisconsin (1941) and Ph.D. from Harvard University (1952). Also held faculty appointments at Carnegie Mellon University (1947-1952), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1952-1962), and the University of Rochester (1962-1970). President of the American Finance Association 1975-1976. Associate Editor for the Journal of Finance, Financial Management, the Journal of Banking & Finance, and the Journal of Economics & Business. Ford Foundation Faculty Fellow in 1963, and Connaught Faculty Fellow in 1982. Elected as a Fellow the Royal Society of Canada in 1993. Received honorary Doctorates from McMaster University in 1993 and the University of Toronto in 2005. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Myron was a tireless campaigner throughout his adult life for progressive causes, including civil rights, social justice, and world peace. He gave generously of both his time and money, and through his passionate involvement he inspired others to do the same. He also served during WW II as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Myron is pre-deceased by his beloved wife Betty, and survived by a devoted family: sons Joe and David, daughter-in-law Kris, and granddaughters Katie, Valerie and Rachel. He will be remembered fondly by friends and colleagues around the world.
