Dear Mrs. Mitchell and family, I was so saddened and deeply sorry to hear of your loss. John was such a special man and will be missed greatly here at St. Joseph's. I had the priviledge of attending ethics at lunch at St. Joseph's Wayne as well as other conferences that John led and spoke at. I work in Mission Services in Wayne and would often get to the room early to be sure John had everything that he needed. We'd chat while waiting for everyone to arrive. John would often talk about his grandchildren and share that he was heading off to be with them afterwards. It was easy to see that he was such a proud grandpa and loved you all very much. I'm sure he will be with you in spirit and I pray that you are comforted by the many happy memories that you shared. May God Bless you all and may John rest in peace.

My sincere condolences for you on the passing of your husband, father and grandfather. I was a professor at Seton Hall for 36 years before moving to Florida. I had the pleasure of serving as one of the two Associate Deans with John around 1984 for four years. It was always a joy to come into work and speak with him every day. Although I was from the Chemistry Department and John, Religious Studies, we had some great and spirited conversations as well as some memorable funny moments together. We all will miss him very much.

Dear John,
You left your mark as a visionary at Seton Hall University, leading our community to a richer and kinder place. You were truly its mind, heart and spirit. You taught each of us what it meant to engage our students in thinking and caring about themselves, their environment and one another. But, most of all John, you were my friend and I am thankful today, more than ever, that our paths crossed. For, having done so, I am a better person. I will miss you.
Fondly, Pat

To Mrs. Mitchell and Family,
I wanted to offer my heartfelt condolences on John’s passing – the words feel completely inadequate for the enormity of this loss to your family. I knew John for 13 years. He was my colleague in the School of Health and Medical Sciences, but he was also my professor in a bioethics course and the first person to help me begin to refine the topic for my dissertation. I will miss his outstanding humor, blunt honesty, wisdom and mentorship. My greatest delight in recent years, however, was watching John carry Bernie into McQuaid for a visit or listening to him talk about Charlie and Eloise. The joy in his eyes and pride in his voice were always present when he talked about his family, but never more than when witnessing his sheer delight in his role as a grandfather. May he find eternal rest and may the respect, praise and stories from his colleagues and friends provide some comfort to your family.

It is with a heavy heart that I write these words. Unfortunately, I will not be available for the services Friday and Saturday. John was a faithful friend. He and I were part of a foursome who wrote a discussion guide to accompany the US Bishops' Pastoral on Peace. I enjoyed John's wit and wisdom. He had a warm, affirming manner that endeared him to so many. I am shocked at the sudden death of one who, in this 50th anniversary of Vatican II, can truly rest in the peace of having lived and taught its treasures. I will miss him and feel this world will not be the same without him. His spirit will live on in my happy memories of him. I pray for your comfort. Love, Betsy Clark, SSJ

Mrs. Michell and family, my sincerest condolences on the loss of your husband and father. John was a wonderful man and true friend to my late husband and me. I know "my Jack" recognized John's integrity and humanity, while treasuring his friendship and enjoying his humor during his tenure as Dean of SHU School of Graduate Medical Education. John visited my husband often through his illness, and I will never forget his kindness and charm. Find comfort in knowing that he loved his family and had a passion for his work.
