Donald H. Wimmer Ph.D., 80, of South Orange, N.J., passed away on Monday, May 20, 2013, at home. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady Of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St., South Orange, on Saturday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. Entombment is in the Chapel of Short Hills, Millburn, N.J. Visitation will be held at Preston Funeral Home, 153 South Orange Ave., South Orange, on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Born in Medford, Wis., Professor Wimmer lived in South Orange for 42 years. He was a religious studies professor at Seton Hall University, South Orange, from 1965 until retiring in 2003. He also served as archeology director of Tel Safut in Jordan from 1982 to the present. Professor Wimmer received a B.A. in theology and philosphy from Marquette, an M.A. in theology from Marquette and a Ph.D. in Biblical studies from the University of Notre Dame. He was the devoted father of Richard J., and Paul T. Wimmer and his wife Jennifer, and the late Stephanie Nooney; dear brother of Elizabeth Smith, Edmund Wimmer, Mary Scharmach, William, Thomas, and David Wimmer, and Patricia Pire, and loving grandfather of Collin and Kyle Wimmer. He is also survived by many other loving relatives. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Association (Thyca.Org) would be appreciated.
