Obituary of Robert J. Miller, III

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert Jackson Miller III, an architect and father of four girls, died on Monday of complications related to melanoma. He was 48 years old. Mr. Miller was the co-founder of Miller & Wright Architects, a New York City based architecture firm that has designed award-winning homes, clubs, churches, schools and libraries. He was most proud of his work designing the St. Coletta School in Washington, D.C.. He cherished the idea of creating a beautiful space where children and adults with intellectual disabilities could learn and grow. Mr. Miller was born in Washington D.C. He grew up in Chevy Chase Village and attended the Landon School, where he made friends that he kept throughout his life. Those friends would gather once a year for a high-stakes, competitive "Brown and White" golf weekend (he would want people to know that his White team won four out of nine events, with one tie). He studied architecture at the University of Virginia, earning degrees in both Architecture and Architectural History. Mr. Miller earned his Masters Degree in Architecture at Princeton University. Prior to forming Miller & Wright, Mr. Miller worked in the office of Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York. He continued his career at Michael Graves Architect and was the partner-in-charge of the New York office for five years. Mr. Miller's work has appeared in numerous publications including Architectural Digest, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, New Jersey Life, Waterfront Home & Design, Professional Builder, Custom Homes, and Blueprints. His lifelong passion for architecture paled next to his love for his wife and four daughters. Mr. Miller was happiest watching movies with his girls, coaching their lacrosse teams, or swimming on the beach in Rehoboth Beach, De. with them. He was active in every element of his girls' lives, from attending plays and assisting in projects at the Far Brook School in Short Hills, NJ where three of his daughters attend, to custom designing elaborate Halloween costumes. He is survived by his wife, Grace Mulvihill Miller, his daughters, Eve Maddox Miller, Grace Margot Miller, Elizabeth Bowes Miller (Lily B) and Frances Mulvihill Miller (Poppy), his sisters, Emily Miller Bruun (Chris Bruun), Jennifer West Anderson (Thorold Barker), his brother Robert Anderson (Beth Johnson), his parents Daniel Godwin Anderson and Margot West Anderson, 10 sisters and brothers-in-law and 20 adoring nieces and nephews. A wake will be held Thursday March 13th at St. George's Church, 550 Ridgewood Rd, Maplewood, NJ from 6-8 pm with a funeral service to be also held at St. George's Church on Friday, March 14th at 12PM.
