I only have fond memories of Uncle Sam...whether from his days of South Orange little league volunteering when I was a kid growing up in S.O. to working with him in the USPS in South Orange. Many wonderful time with him and his sage advice on life. Uncle Sam was the one who mentored me as a rookie latter carrier in 1985. He put the magazine and letter piles of mail into my right arm and said, "Lets go". After a few attempts of delivery, he realized that I was fumbling around and not able to mange on my own.........he inquired to me with his razor wit., if I was experiencing (translated) any difficulty. I then switch the load of mail to my left arm and became a letter carrier a few days later. Another time during a lunch break....Uncle Sam and I stopped at the bocce ball courts by the duck pond. We played (and beat) a team of older Italian gentlemen who spoke no English. Immediately, U.S. said, "Lets go", as these men started loudly grumbling about something. I asked to Uncle Sam what was all the commotion about. He stated these guys were very upset because they had never lost to a blue eyed, Irish guy before.........and they were not pleased. We laughed for many years about that one. Uncle Sam was a great one and he and Mrs.Fabrizio, my second grade teacher at OLS will be in our thoughts and prayers.

My Uncle Sam and I got along very well. We would speak by phone periodically, and whether we talked about current events, his “good old days” in South Orange, or his health issues, it was always an enjoyable conversation.
Sometimes I would visit him after he had a medical procedure – his heart operation or carotid artery surgery – and I always admired that no matter what he was struggling with at the time, he just kept on going and never let it get him down. Sure enough, with his positive attitude, he would get through it.
Underneath his tough exterior, he was a very kind and soft-hearted man and I have many fond memories of him.
Rest in peace, Uncle Sam. You will be missed.
