Alwin A. Arce, 66, of Brick, N.J., formerly of Vailsburg, N.J., passed on Monday, June 23, 2014, at the Deborah Heart & Lung Center, Pemberton, N.J. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St., South Orange, N.J., on Friday, June 27, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private. Visitation will be held at Preston Funeral Home, 153 South Orange Ave., South Orange, on Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. For more information or to send condolences, please visit prestonfuneralhome.net. Born in New York, N.Y., Alwin lived in Brick for the past 23 years. He graduated from Northwestern University and earned a J.D. from Seton Hall Law School in 1986. A professor at Ocean County College since 2001, he was a former dean at Seton Hall University, a former trustee of Essex County College, and a lifetime member of the Association of Community College Trustees. He was a member of the NJ Council of Community Colleges and the NJ Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, as well as a founding member of the Atlantic City Puerto Rican Day Parade Committee, and various civic and community-related organizations. He also belonged to ASPIRA and Latino Justice PRLDEF, and was president of Hispanic Ventures, LLC, in Absecon, N.J., for over 25 years. He was the beloved husband of Filomena Baublys Arce; loving father of Alaina and Alexis Arce, and is also survived by many siblings and their families. In lieu of flowers, donations to Deborah Heart/Lung Foundation, 200 Trenton Road, Browns Mills, N.J. 08015 would be appreciated.
