John S. Murawa WII Vet, Retired AT & T Employee, Avid Bridge Player, 101 John S. Murawa, 101, of Short Hills passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2016 Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave, Short Hills, on Thursday, Sept 29th at 11:15 AM. Interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Short Hills. Visitation will be held at The Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home 2122 Millburn Ave, Maplewood on Wednesday, 4:00-8:00 pm. Born in Poland, John lived in Jersey City before moving to Short Hills in 1990. He was a laboratory technician for AT&T from 1951-1977. During his tenure, he collaborated on the construction of the first telecommunications satellite, "Telstar". John served as a tank commander during WWII. He not only saw action in the major battles of Normandy, but also helped liberate other cities in France, Belgium and the Netherlands culminating with the German surrender of its naval base in Wilhelmshaven. He was a member of Millburn's Old Guard and enjoyed playing bridge weekly. John was a kind, loving, gentle person and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a truly caring family man who will be greatly missed. John was predeceased by his wife Emilia Basarewski Murawa and seven siblings. He is survived by his daughter Christine Costanzo and her husband Peter and his son Henry Murawa and his wife Loretta, grandchildren Justine and Emily Murawa, Laura and Peter Costanzo III.
