Obituary of David C. Cates
Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
David C. Cates, 88, passed away March 25, 2015 of natural causes. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, April 26th at 1PM at St. George's Church 550 Ridgewood Rd, in Maplewood NJ.
Born in Evanston, Illinois, David was raised in Winnetka and New York City. Whether it was doing reconnaissance photography over the coast of China in 1946, sailing up the coast of Labrador in 1948, hiking in the White Mountains, living among Navajo Indians to study the Navajo language and culture in the 1950s or captaining his own Bank Consulting company, David was always able to see the gateway to the next adventure and was ready to seize any opportunity for a new experience.
Noting the discrepancy between the way men and women are described in business articles, David always hoped to be referred to in print as "the pert father of five". Surviving him are his wife, Jane, daughters Gwendolen, Marjorie and Lilian, sons David and Eli and granddaughters Melanie and Sophia.
In lieu of flowers , memorial contributions may be made in David's name to the Seamen's Church Institute, 50 Broadway, Floor 26, New York NY 10004 where he served as a Port Newark ship visitor for many years.
