William H. Watson, 72, of Newark died on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, in Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the South Orange Vailsburg Methodist Church, 150 South Orange Ave., South Orange, on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. Interment will be private. Visitation will be held at the church on Sunday from 4 p.m. until time of service. Arrangements are by the Preston Funeral Home, South Orange. Born in Memphis, Tenn., Mr. Watson lived in Newark for 10 years. Mr. Watson was the lead organizer of Unified Vailsburg, Newark, from 1974 to 1981, and was a social worker for the organization before retiring. In 1984, he was director of the Social Concerns Department for the Capitol Region Conference of Churches in Hartford, Conn. He also served a pastor at the United Methodist Churches, North-Central Pennsylvania, and as a campus minister at Penn State University in Pennsylvania. Mr. Watson earned a B.A. from Lambuth College, Jackson, Tenn., and a B.D. from Duke University in basic theological education. He also did additional graduate work at Boston University. A member of the South Orange Vailsburg Methodist Church, South Orange, he was the brother of James Watson.
