The funeral will be private for William S. Evans, 99, of Maplewood, who died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at home. Arrangements are by the Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, Maplewood. For more information or to send condolences, please visit jacobhollefuneralhome.com. Born in Fries, Va., Mr. Evans lived in Maplewood for 60 years. He was the owner of Evans Warehouse in Kearny from 1950 to 1971. Mr. Evans started his warehouse experience working as an accountant for Newark Central Warehouse. He then rose to become an officer in the company. He later left to found his own warehousing company, Evans Warehouse Co. in Port Newark and South Kearny, and trucking company, Merchants Parcel Delivery Co. Both were involved with the handling of major household appliances. He continued to run his business until 1971, when he sold it to a partner. Mr. Evans was honored by Whos Who in the East as a warehouse and transportation executive. He was president of the Traffic Club in Northern New Jersey, past president of the Maplewood Country Club and a former member of the Essex County Country Club, where he was a former senior golf champion. He was also an officer of the N.J. branch of the U.S. Power Squadron and of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and a member of the Richmond County Yacht Club in Staten Island, N.Y. Mr. Evans was an active member of St. Josephs Church, Maplewood, and a major benefactor of Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., which he attended along with Northeastern University. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Cranston Evans; devoted father of William R. Evans and his partner, Robert Russell, and Daniel Evans and his partner, James L. Kelly.
