Bertha Joffe, textile designer, wife of Dr. Joseph Joffe who was a professor of chemical engineering at NJIT, and mother of three sons, Robert, Paul and Richard, died on Thursday, July 1, 2010, in Winchester Gardens in Maplewood. She was 97. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, before the Russian Revolution, Mrs. Joffe came to America in 1924 and moved to Maplewood with her family in 1950. She graduated from The City College of New York and received a master's degree from Columbia University's Teachers College. She was a longtime member of the Unitarian Church in Summit. She is survived by sons, Paul of Washington, D.C., and Richard of Manhattan; grandchildren, Katherine of Manhattan, David of Manhattan and Heather of Washington D.C., and step-grandchildren, Elizabeth DeHaas of Manhattan and Ryan DeHaas of Charlotte, N.C. There will be a private memorial service for the family. Arrangements are by the Jacob A. Holle Funeral Home, Maplewood.
