Edward H. Milby, Jr., 71, died Thursday morning of complications due to esophageal cancer and Parkinson's Disease. Born on July 15, 1939 in New York, N.Y. to Edward Howarth Milby and Essie Browne Milby. A man who was good with his hands, Milby always wanted to be a mechanic or an engineer since high school at the Manhattan School of Aviation. He served in the Air Force as an aviation mechanic, 1957-1962, stationed in Okinawa. He married Tsuruko Katekawa in Naha, Okinawa, Japan in 1961. In1962 he began a 36-year career at Con Edison as a Power Generation Mechanic. He earned an associates degree in Applied Science at The College of Staten Island (CUNY) in 1992. Milby also served 15 years in the Selective Service System. He was a member of Community Planning Board 9, in the Bronx, and a Charter member of the NAACP East Bronx Chapter. A devoted family man and a deacon of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, he served many years working in the homeless shelter for men at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in the Bronx. If Milby was not at work or at church, he was always fixing something in his house. A wake will be held on Sunday, September 12th at Preston Funeral Home, 153 South Orange Avenue in South Orange, N.J. from 2:00-6:00pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 13th at 11:00am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 327 Bolton Avenue, Bronx, NY. Interment Rose Hills Memorial Park, Putnam Valley, NY. He is survived by his wife Tsuruko Katekawa Milby, sons Edward Ash-Milby, Daniel and Jonathan Milby, grandchildren Krystal, David, Nathan, Jared, Wyatt and Erin, brothers William, Douglas, Andrew and James Milby and his sisters Essie Rauba and Mimi Porteus.
