Obituary of Xanthie G. Savidis

On August 5, 2011 -- Xanthie G. Savidis (nee Vasiliades), 80, a 55- year resident
of Maplewood, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, passed away on Friday after a long illness.
Mrs. Savidis held an undergraduate degree from Parson's School of Design, with additional study at Fordham University under a fellowship. She worked
in the early 1950's as a designer for Hart Schaffner Marx and also designed several patterns of china for Lenox. She was also an accomplished classically trained opera singer and performed vocal solos at Symphony Hall in Newark in her college years.
Mrs. Savidis was born in Morristown, NJ
to Greek immigrant parents from near the area of Constantinople, present day Istanbul
Mrs. Savidis was active for decades at Ss. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Orange, where she also taught Sunday School for many
years. She also served several years as a PTA officer in the Maplewood school system.
She was predeceased by her husband, Kyriakos (Kirk) Savidis, a lifelong Maplewood resident who operated a several-generation family business, Savidis Deli-Liquors, present in Maplewood Center for almost 80 years.
Mrs. Savidis is survived by her daughter Maria Savidis Markatos of Maplewood, sons Savas Savidis of Franklin Lakes and George Savidis of Washington DC; four grandchildren, Xanthie Horowitz of Hoboken and Kirk, Sophia and Zoe Savidis of Washington DC; and brother Leonidas G.Vasiliades of Rockaway formerly of Maplewood.
Visitation will be held at The Jacob Holle Funeral Home in Maplewood, 2122 Millburn Ave, Maplewood on Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Ss. Nicholas, Constantine and Helen Church, 510 Linden Place, Orange on Wednesday, Aug 10th at 10am. Interment Restland Memorial Park, East Hanover.
Donations in memory of Mrs. Savidis may be made to the Ss Nicholas, Constantine and Helen building fund.
