Florence Lorraine (Van Riper) Hakim of Maplewood passed away at home on Wednesday September 26th from ALS with her family by her side. The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday October 16th from 6 pm to 9 pm at The Jacob Holle Funeral Home 2122 Millburn Avenue, Maplewood. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday October 17th at 11:00 am in the Ivy Chapel of Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church, 600 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood .
Known as Lorraine , Mrs. Hakim was born and raised in Forest Hill Newark. She graduated from Barringer High School in 1947. In 1951 she received a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a Certificate for Teaching Emotionally Handicapped Children from Newark State Teacher's College (now Kean University). In 1954 she received a Master's degree in Guidance in Elementary Education . She was a life member of the National Education Association. Mrs. Hakim taught elementary school in the Newark school system until her daughter was born in 1958.
Mrs. Hakim previously lived in Maplewood from 1962 to 1968.She lived in Roseland from 1968 to 2005 and Livingston from 2005 to 2011. She lived with her daughter and son in law from April 2011 until her death. Mrs. Hakim loved gardening and animals. She volunteered or was a member of The Roseland Beautification Committee, the West Orange Animal Welfare League, the Garden State All Terrier Club and the Irish Terrier Club of NJ.
Mrs. Hakim was predeceased by her husband Dr. Noori Hakim. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Hakim, son-in law Kim Feddersen and her beloved cat Callie.
