Arden was my high school friend. She taught me about Rudolph Steiner, French film and Robert Burns who she quoted in a Scottish brogue on a beach trip we took. She was very kind to me when my father died of cancer my senior year. Arden was wonderful, and my heart goes out to her son and her husband.

Tom and Malcolm are in our thoughts and prayers. Arden will be deeply missed by me and so many others. Not only was she smart, curious and articulate, but she was warm and caring, and very funny. A very proud and loving mother, and a good friend.

Dearest Thomas & Malcolm, you don't know me. I worked with Arden one summer painting the Student Union at Lawrence University. God, we had so much fun. And that paint job held up for more than 20 years while the president's house next door, which was spray painted, lasted three! It was a sweet, sweet time. I saw her again in Boston for one brief moment and moved very shortly afterward. I saw her name in the Lawrence magazine just tonight. My deepest condolences. I lost my husband 5 years ago. Eat well, sleep, exercise, hug each other, keep loving.

I also knew Arden at Harvard so many years ago when we were all young dreamers behind the scenes. It seems to me that she made her dreams come true. Deepest condolences to Tom and Malcolm and all who loved her.

Such sad news, Arden in the prime of her productive life. My deepest condolences especially to her husband Tom and son Malcolm (whom I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting), to her father and sister Laura (with whom I spent time when living in Washington), and to the rest of her family and many friends.
Generous, smart, iconoclast… Arden’s loving spirit will remain with me and certainly so many others… So many fond memories remain from over 30 years ago; we’d only once met up since those undergraduate days at Lawrence, but I somehow expected us to meet again…
I reread Matthew Arnold’s “Dover Beach,” thinking of Arden: the “eternal note of sadness” of the sea, and the “darkling plain” of the world, now that much more dimmed without Arden’s shining presence.
R.I.P. dear soul, dear Leo, dear Arden.

Arden, I will never forget your penetrating gaze beneath dark eyebrows and a lion's mane of curls. I could not help being touched by your infectious enthusiasm, your flashes of insight, and your very special grace.
You stirred the still air of that long-ago Library with lively words scattered in sparking half-lives around the "Tub" of catalogue cards. You woke us all up with your voice, your imagination and sense of humor. Even back then, you seemed more alive than ordinary human beings, brimming with energy, compassion, curiosity and mischievous irreverence. We had no choice but to come along with you for the ride.
I'm so grateful my path crossed yours during those strange and magical years, and it has been wonderful to read about all you have accomplished since. I am deeply sad that the time for your departure came so early, and I will always keep a place in my heart for you and Tom, and your family.
