Manuel Fernandes, 83, of South Orange, N.J., died Jan. 14, 2016, at the Veterans Affairs hospital in East Orange, N.J. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady Of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St., South Orange, on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be held at Preston Funeral Home, 153 South Orange Ave., South Orange, on Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. For more information or to send condolences, please visit prestonfuneralhome.net. Born in Marion, Mass., Mr. Fernandes lived in South Orange for 34 years. He was an Air Force veteran, serving from 1953 to 1957. He retired as an electrical engineer at AT&T Bell Labs, Holmdel, N.J., and worked there from 1960 to 1994. He graduated from N.J.I.T. with a B.S. in electrical engineering in 1974. Mr. Fernandes loved playing golf at many courses all over the country. He was a member of the Garden State Duffers Golf Club and a founding member of the Garden State Dufferettes Golf Club. He was a devout New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics fan. Manuel was the beloved husband of Joy (Davis) Fernandes; devoted father of Anthony Teat, and Tanya Foreman and her husband, Anthony, and the loving grandfather of Tyana and Antonia Foreman. He was the dear brother of Elizabeth Walker, Nancy Concholar, Jean Barbour, Julie Ann Gomes, and Steven Fernandes and the late John Henry Flora, John Teixeira, Henry Fernandes Jr. and Flora Pina.
