Obituary of Doreen O. Miller
Please share a memory of Doreen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Doreen Orinthia Miller (nee Whitehead), 94, of Orange, NJ, was the wife of the late Charles Augustus Miller and the daughter of the late Rose Eugene Proctor and the late Joseph Whitehead. She was the loving mother of Dr. Michael Miller of Canada, Regan Miller of CA, Dr. Sandrene Miller, the late Charles Miller Jr., Maxine (Jewel) Johnston and Nigel Miller of NJ, Claude (Orrin) Miller of NY, Marlyn (Ann) Holder of PA and Joanne Sechrest of WA. She is survived by 15 grandchildren.
Doreen was born in Goed Fortuin on the West Bank of Demerara, Guyana, formerly British Guiana. She attended Freeburg Primary School and Allen High School and then began work as a draftswoman at the Demerara Bauxite Company (Demba). She married Charles in 1947 and started raising her family in Mahaica. In 1960 the family relocated to Queenstown, Georgetown, where she and Charles built a life filled with conviviality, success and family virtues. At the age of 45, when 7 of their children were still attending school, Doreen lost her husband. She singlehandedly continued to raise and nurture her family in Georgetown until 1977, when she emigrated to the USA and settled in Orange, NJ.
Her children's success in life, the successes of her many grandchildren and the love they all bore for Doreen, are testaments to the sacrifices that she made on a daily basis on behalf of the family that she so loved and cherished. She will remain forever in our hearts.
A funeral mass will take place at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect St., South Orange, NJ, (973) 763-5454, www.olschurch.com. The service and interment will be followed by a repast from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM at the Wyndham Hamilton Park Hotel and Conference Center, 175 Park Avenue, Florham Park, NJ, (973) 377-2424.
